Netherlands 0-0 France - Euro 2024 RECAP: Les Bleus continue to miss Kylian Mbappe as Antoine Griezm
Four down, 12 to go...
It's time for me to say goodnight...
Just before I head off, let's have a quick recap. So, both the Netherlands and France are through to the knockout stages after playing out a goalless draw in Leipzig.
Both sides had their moments. Antoine Griezmann missed two gilt-edged chances, and Xavi Simons saw a goal disallowed - controversially.
But in the end, neither side will care, they have now achieved what they set out to do at the start of the tournament.
The result also means that Poland are officially out of the tournament after losing both of their opening matches.
Now we wait to see which other 12 teams will progress to the knockout stages, after Germany, and Spain also confirmed their progression earlier this week.
Anyway, it's time for me to bounce, it has been a pleasure as always.
Goodnight!
Group D as it stands...
So, this is how Group D is looking at the night comes to and.
What do we know? Well, the Netherlands and France have confirmed their passage to the last 16, while Poland are out.
That means if Austria beat the Dutch on Tuesday 25 June, there will be three teams from the group in the knockouts.
Thats the only thing left to play for in this group.
Ronald Koeman: 'Dumfries isn't disturbing the goalkeeper'
Ronald Koeman, Netherlands boss, speaking from his press conference:
The position of Dumfries is offside, that's true, but he isn't disturbing the goalkeeper. It's a legal goal. And you need five minutes to check it? I don't understand this. Once again, he's not disturbing the goalkeeper.WATCH: Simons' disallowed goal
If you haven't seen it, here is your chance.
When the ball hit the net from the boot of Xavi Simons, I'm pretty sure everyone just thought it was a goal.
I am still in the camp that it should have been given, but now you can make your own minds up...
21:33A rare stalemate...
Before today it had been 50 games since the last goalless draw at a European Championship.
The match in question? England vs Scotland at Euro 2020.
I wanted to block out that match from my memory, it was a terrible evening of footie.
Just like tonight, I guess.
21:27Poland are OUT
While it's joy for the Dutch and the French, it's despair for Poland.
Tonight's draw paired with their 3-1 loss to Austria earlier, Poland have now been dumped out of Euro 2024.
Robert Lewandowski has only managed 35 minutes in this tournament in what is set to be his last major international tournament.
A sad end...
SOFASCORE STATS: Netherlands 0-0 France
It wasn't a classic by any stretch, was it?
These statistics tell the story practically, lots of half-chances, but not many that caused too many problems.
France huffed and puffed, but they just weren't clinical enough. Antoine Griezmann was the main culprit for missing in big moments.
I think it's fair to say, though, a draw was fair.
Player of the Match: Ngolo Kante
Now this has surprised me.
Look, Ngolo Kante is one hell of a player, and against Austria he was superb.
I wouldn't say he was the best player on the pitch this evening, though, my vote goes to Xavi Simons.
To be honest, there weren't many standouts, were there?
Fan Reaction: 'A goal every day of the week'
Anonymous: VAR ruins a game, it was a goal every day of the week!21:06Should Simons' strike have stood?
I'm going to answer my own question, yes?
The controversy of this goal will be talked about over the next few days. Why? Because the refereeing team was English.
VAR has been near enough immaculate so far this tournament, and today was the first time we truly saw it falter.
Denzel Dumfries was deemed offside when Xavi Simons struck the ball, but was he truly interfering with play?
What do you think?
Qualification secured
So, we have our first two teams in the knockout stages.
Yes, the game was the best we have ever seen, but in the end, neither side will really care.
You'd expect that both the Netherlands and France will go far in this competition, but going off that display, you never know.
Two down, 14 to go...
FULL-TIME: Netherlands 0-0 France
It's taken a week, but we have our first stalemate of Euro 2024.
It's not a match that will live long in the memory, but I'm sure Xavi Simons won't forget it in a hurry.
He thought he had netted a potential winner for the Dutch 20 minutes from time, only for it to be controversially ruled out for offside.
I must admit, I think it was harsh, but the French will be happy Anthony Taylor and Stuart Atwell made the decision they did.
Both sides have now qualified for the round of 16, which means Poland are out.
Netherlands 0-0 France
This match is petering to an end.
One last chance for France to attack, they have to put all hands to the pump now.
20:51, 92'Netherlands 0-0 France
If one side is going to get a winner, it looks like it will be France.
They are starting to flow forward with regularity, the Netherlands can't get out of their own area.
The Dutch have three minutes to hold on.
20:50FIVE added minutes
Now five minutes is enough for a winner, right?
Will we get one? Probably not, well, it doesn't feel like it.
Prove me wrong.
20:49, 89'Netherlands 0-0 France
Adrien Rabiot, you have to do better there.
The French midfielder is away down the left and just needs to play the ball across goal for Antoine Griezmann to finish.
But he overcooks it and the move comes to an abrupt end...
20:46, 87'Netherlands 0-0 France
It's not going to happen, is it?
The ball is floated to the back stick in the Dutch box, Olivier Giroud meets it but can't pick out Antoine Griezmann in the middle.
The Netherlands are just about keeping France at bay, they have defended very well at times tonight.
Netherlands 0-0 France
I feel like we are about to get our first stalemate of the tournament.
There are seven minutes plus added time for a winner from either side, but let's be honest, it doesn't look like coming.
That Xavi Simons disallowed goal was the moment.
20:39, 79'SUBSTITUTION: Netherlands 0-0 France
Here we go, Wout Weghorst time is upon us.
The Dutch striker scored a stoppage-time winner against Poland and he has now entered the action, replacing Memphis Depay.
Can he do it again?
20:37, 78'Netherlands 0-0 France
The momentum of this game has suddenly shifted in the Netherlands' favour.
It seems the anger of seeing a goal ruled out controversially is spurring them on.
Gini Wijnaldum wins a free-kick, and the resulting set-piece goes out for a corner.
Virgil van Dijk time?
20:34, 75'SUBSTITUTION: Netherlands 0-0 France
To make matters worse for Xavi Simons, not only has his goal been ruled out, but he is now being hooked.
Gini Wijnaldum is on in his place, which to me is a surprising change from Ronald Koeman.
France also look to the bench. Both Kingsley Comand and Olivier Giroud enter the fray for Marcus Thuram and Ousmane Dembele.
Still no Kylian Mbappe.
20:32, 73'VAR: NO GOAL!
Wow, they've chalked it off.
I am in disbelief. Xavi Simons fires home on the rebound after a good save by Mike Maignan, but it's been ruled out.
The reason is due to Denzel Dumfires' position, but he is not involved in play whatsoever.
I'm shocked that it's not been given.
VAR CHECKING GOAL...
This check is taking some time.
There is a player in an offside position as Xavi Simons strikes the ball home, but he is next to the goalkeeper and not interfering with play.
Guess which countries the referees are from...
GOAL!!! Netherlands 1-0 France (Simons 69')
Xavi Simons against the run of play!
Oh hang on, VAR are checking for offside...
This would be very harsh.
Netherlands 0-0 France
France are getting closer and closer.
Ousmane Dembele is the next player to get his chance, and he fires it over the bar from the edge of the box.
France have just not been clinical enough today, they should be out of sight.
20:25, 65'WHAT A MISS! Netherlands 0-0 France
How has Antoine Griezmann missed, what has happened to the Frenchman?
Ngolo Kante slides the ball into the striker and he is just six yards from goal, he has to score.
But once again he loses his footing and tamely slides the ball wide via a touch from the glove of Bart Verbruggen.
France will rue these missed chances if they don't find a winner.
CLOSE! Netherlands 0-0 France
Ooooh, now we are talking.
Aurelien Tchouameni leaps like a salmon to rise above the Dutch defence, and he meets a corner with a strong head.
The connection is good, the power is good, but the ball dips just over the bar.
We are getting closer!
20:22, 62'Netherlands 0-0 France
Ousmane Dembele tries to inspire the French fans to start making some noise.
The atmosphere has been rather flat so far in this second half, and so has the football.
20:20, 60'Netherlands 0-0 France
Marcus Thuram tries to take matters into his own hands.
He collects the ball under a lot of pressure and decides to pull the trigger on the edge of the area.
It's not a bad effort, but it does fly wide of the mark.
20:16, 57'Netherlands 0-0 France
Adrien Rabiot has just sent the ball toward the moon.
Ok, that may be harsh, it's a tough chance as the cross comes into him. He takes it first time on the bounce and it flies over the bar.
I just like making the moon joke when I can.
20:14, 55'Netherlands 0-0 France
That's a lovely bit of play by Xavi Simons.
He drives at the France defence and on the way gets clipped by Ousmane Dembele to earn a free-kick in a strong position.
Memphis Depay looks set to take... it hits the wall. A very poor set-piece.
Netherlands 0-0 France
That moment of magic looks a long way off going by that Ngolo Kante effort.
It's not often the former Chelsea man pulls the trigger, and maybe it should stay that way.
Kante is some way out and blasts it miles over, not his finest moment.
Netherlands 0-0 France
I was praising Ousmane Dembele for his pace, but the same cannot be said about the speed of this game.
France are just passing it around at a walking pace, there is no intent whatsoever.
This match needs a moment of magic.
20:07, 48'Netherlands 0-0 France
Phoar, Ousmane Dembele is a pacy boy, isn't he?
Too pacy for his own good, he glides past Nathan Ake on the right but running at full pelt he overruns the ball.
I admire the speed, but not the skill.
SECOND HALF: Netherlands 0-0 France
Right, it's time to get going again.
There have been no changes at the break, and France get the ball rolling once more.
Can either side break the deadlock?
19:59'Both teams have been sloppy'
Wayne Rooney, former England striker, on BBC One:
I think both teams have been a bit sloppy. That final pass has to be a bit cleaner and then I'm sure we'll see some goals. If you've got a midfield player who's trying to step out then I'd always try to step into that space. If Griezmann does that then I think he'll have a lot of space.19:56Time for Mbappe?
France have been impressive, but surely this is a match for Kylian Mbappe.
If he was in Adrien Rabiot's position earlier, it's 1-0 France, so I'd be tempted to bring him on sooner rather than later if I was Didier Deschamps.
But I'm not, so I guess we will have to wait and see.
WATCH: Rabiot and Griezmann fluff their lines
I'm still in disbelief watching this sitter now.
Antoine Griezmann may get the brunt of the criticism, but why Adrien Rabiot didn't shoot, I just don't know.
Rabiot was through, he just had to slide it past Bart Verbruggen in goal, so why did he pass.
Yes, Griezmann then should do better, but Rabiot's ball isn't the best, is it?
An all-round poor portion of play.
19:48HALF-TIME: Netherlands 0-0 France
And there goes the whistle.
The scoreline does not tell the story of this match so far, there have been chances at both ends.
France will probably feel more arrived that they are not in front, how Adrien Rabiot and Antoine Griezmann both didn't find the back of the net I'll never know.
They didn't, though, and neither did the Dutch. There is plenty more to play for in this one.
ONE added minute
Do they just always decide to only add one minute?
It feels like there have only been 60 seconds of first-half stoppage time in every match.
Well, there is only that amount of time here too.
19:44, 42'Netherlands 0-0 France
Oh dear, the Netherlands fans are being stupid.
Antoine Griezmann goes over to take a corner and is greeted by a number of flying objects.
There is no place for that in football, very poor from the Dutch supporters.
19:43, 41'Netherlands 0-0 France
Naughty Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutch captain snaps at the heels of Ousmane Dembele who goes down eventually.
The free-kick is just outside the area, and Antoine Griezmann is standing over it...
The wall does its job. Anti-climactic.
Netherlands 0-0 France
How has Stefan de Vrij avoided a caution there?
Marcus Thuram rinses the Netherlands defender, who in turn leaves his leg dangling.
It catches Thuram who wins the free-kick, but surely the Dutchman should then be booked? He isn't.
Netherlands 0-0 France
France are starting to get sloppy.
Antoine Griezmann gives the ball away but is then bailed out by the brilliant William Saliba.
Then Ousmane Dembele can't keep hold of it, and Xavi Simons poaches it from him.
Simons then decides to go alone but his shot is tame.
19:36, 34'Netherlands 0-0 France
Cody Galkpo makes a really good run, but Stefan de Vrij can't pick him out.
Gakpo has been hot and cold so far, I couldn't tell you if he has been good or bad, in truth.
An interesting performance.
19:34, 32'Netherlands 0-0 France
We have our first yellow card, and it's as clear as they get.
Antoine Griezmann breaks away on the counter after Cody Gakpo fluffs a pass.
He is being pulled back by Jerdy Schouten for what seems a considerable amount of time as he crosses the halfway line.
And then he falls down and Anthony Taylor pulls out the yellow in a flash.
CHANCE! Netherlands 0-0 France
Now it's Marcus Thuram's turn to make a poor decision.
The forward races through, he is onside, he surely is just going to fire it across the goalkeeper?
No, he just blasts it over the bar. It's like he thought he was offside, but I can assure you he was definitely on.
A waste of a chance.
Netherlands 0-0 France
Oh, Cody Gakpo, that is poor...
The Netherlands are counter-attacking at pace and they work the ball over to Gakpo on the left of the penalty area.
He does his signature move and cuts inside, and then I'm not sure what he was thinking after that.
He gets caught in two minds of shooting and passing and the ball just rolls out of play.
That was a bit odd.
Netherlands 0-0 France
Denzel Dumfries has just bent as far back as he could to try and get a header on target.
I mean, unsurprisingly it doesn't go in. It was such a tough chance from a punt of a free-kick from Memphis Depay.
It will go down as a half-chance, I guess.
19:23, 21'Netherlands 0-0 France
France have got a stranglehold on this match now.
Those missed chances seem to have only spurred them on, while the Netherlands have had their confidence dented.
The French are stroking the ball around under next to no pressure, the Netherlands are just backing off them.
I feel there could be a goal coming before half-time...
19:19, 16'GOOD SAVE! Netherlands 0-0 France
That's what Cody Gakpo can do to you if you fall asleep.
The winger cuts inside and bends it towards the bottom left-hand corner, but Mike Maignan gets low and turns it away at full stretch.
It's a brilliant effort, but also brilliant goalkeeping.
SITTER! Netherlands 0-0 France
Oh my word, what are you doing Adrien Rabiot!
I'm genuinely stunned that France are not 1-0 up, my mouth is currently agast.
Adrien Rabiot is six yards out and just has to slide the ball past Bart Verbruggen, he is in acres of space.
For some reason, he tries to square it to Antoine Griezmann who loses his footing and can't hook the ball into the net.
It's a comedy of errors, it really is.
Netherlands 0-0 France
Jules Kounde, I didn't know you had that in your locker.
The full-back - who I always see as a centre-half - curls in a beautiful ball into the area in search of Antoine Griezmann.
While it's a stunning cross, Griezmann is too small for it...
19:13, 11'Netherlands 0-0 France
The Netherlands have definitely started the better of the two sides here in Leipzig.
Cody Gakpo looks like he has provided the deftest of touches to feed in Memphis Depay, but France manage to hook it clear.
The French are on the back foot.
19:11, 8'Netherlands 0-0 France
The Netherlands are screaming for a penalty, and I mean screaming.
Memphis Depay is being held back in the area by William Saliba and then goes to ground.
But Anthony Taylor is having none of it and I am inclined to agree.
That's what you get for wearing a silly headband, Memphis.
CHANCE! Netherlands 0-0 France
Ooof, that is very nearly a stunner.
Antoine Griezmann decides he wants to have a pop from distance, and it's a sweet strike, but Bart Verbruggen gets a strong hand to it.
The best way I can explain how good of an effort it was, is that I made a squeaky noise as he pulled the trigger.
19:04, 2'BIG CHANCE! Netherlands 0-0 France
Wow, is that Road Runner or Jeremie Frimpong!
The Netherlands full-back races away in behind within the opening minute, and my word is he quick.
Theo Hernandez does well to track back and put him off, and Frimpong scuffs his shot wide via the hands of Mike Maignan.
The corner then comes to nothing, what a start, though...
KICK-OFF: Netherlands 0-0 France
It's crunch time!
Virgil van Dijk and Antoine Griezmann share a lovely moment as they go for the toss - led by English referee Anthony Taylor.
I'm not sure who won it, but what I do know is that the Netherlands have got the ball rolling in Leipzig.
Off we go!
Here come the teams!
Wow, it really is a sea of orange at the Red Bull arena.
That's all the Netherlands players will be looking at as they arise from the tunnel alongside France into a cauldron of noise.
Now for one of my favorite national anthems to listen to - 'La Marseillaise.
It always gets me jigging in my seat, and as ever, it's sung brilliantly - what a tune it is.
The Dutch's isn't bad either, but it doesn't quite have me dancing, I'll admit.
Vibrant atmosphere in Leipzig
Wow, just look at the colour on display.
One side orange, the other, blue, and both are singing at the top of their lungs.
The noise is at near deafening levels, and both sets of supporters are enjoying themselves with kick-off just moments away.
Seeing, and hearing, this has just got me even more excited.
Gakpo to shine again?
While all the talk is about Kylian Mbappe being benched, there should also be focus on a certain Dutch attacker.
That man? Cody Gakpo.
The Liverpool forward was arguably the star of matchday one, he was superb in the Netherlands' win against Poland.
He loves a group stage, he has scored in each of his four starts at this stage of major tournaments, including last week.
He looks so much more comfortable on the left under Ronald Koeman than he does down the middle on Merseyside.
France will want to keep him quiet tonight.
How will France fare without Mbappe?
Now this is going to be interesting to see.
While Kylian Mbappe has never scored at the European Championship, he will always cause problems.
Mbappe is arguably the best player in the world, to not have him starting is a major blow for France.
The Netherlands will be licking their lips, and the French have had to change their whole system.
But there is still heaps of quality in their side.
20 minutes to go...
Thanks, James, it's a pleasure to be on duty.
I have just come from covering Austria's win over Poland, and if we get anything like what we were treated to there, this will be a cracker.
When the fixtures were first released for this tournament, this was one of the games everybody's eyes were drawn to.
We are now just 20 minutes from it starting...
SUBSTITUTION: Reporter
No Kylian Mbappe has not taken a place in the starting 11, it's not quite that exciting.
We have a change of reporter in the pipeline, I am passing over to Harry bamforth who will take you through the rest of the night.
Treat him well!
18:24The Masked Striker
France captain Kylian Mbappe is masked up and ready to go ahead of tonight's clash against the Netherlands.
As Mail Sport previously revealed, Mbappe is not allowed to wear his personalised, tri-colour mask that he's recently been training in.
Instead, the 25-year-old is sporting a sleek, black mask as he gets his preparations underway before kick-off.
The players are here!
With less than an hour until kick-off, the players have made it to the Leipzig Stadium and are checking out the surroundings.
The sun is shining and both sets of fans are in great spirits already, which suggests that we'll be treated to a thrilling match this evening.
FRANCE TEAM NEWS
As expected, there's no place for Kylian Mbappe in Les Bleus' starting line-up. The France captain is on the bench for tonight's clash.
That means, in his place, Aurelien Tchouameni will come into the midfield, with Antoine Griezmann the man tasked with leading the line.
With Real Madrid's Tchouameni in midfield, it gives license for Adrien Rabiot to push higher up the pitch, as he has so often done for France.
18:00NETHERLANDS TEAM NEWS
Ronald Koeman has made one change from his side that beat Poland 2-1 in their opening game on Sunday.
Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong comes into the side in place of defensive midfielder Joey Veerman, as the Netherlands shake up their structure.
It seems as though Frimong will play out wide with Xavi Simons, Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay joining him in the front-line.
17:40Does Kylian Mbappe have a Euros curse?
Very little has gone wrong in the career of Kylian Mbappe since he first burst onto the scene as a prodigious teenager.
At 25, he has already won seven Ligue 1 titles and been paid a fortune by PSG before securing his dream move to Real Madrid this summer.
On the international stage, he has lifted the World Cup and won the Nations League with France, and is now the captain of his country.
But when it comes to the Euros, nothing seems to go right for the superstar striker. Can he change that this evening?

If you're a Leipzig local, you might want to avoid the city's main streets this evening.
That's because Netherlands supporters are out in full force ahead of their clash with France and they're certainly making their presence known.
17:19Fans flock to Leipzig ahead of kick-off
It's safe to say that - just like many of us - France and Netherlands supporters are in the mood for this one.
Both sets of fans have been pictured in high spirits ahead of this evening's clash - with thousands of blue and orange shirts seen sweeping across Leipzig.
Will they be as jolly come the full-time whistle? There's only one way to find out. Kick-off is less than two hours away.
Mbappe expected to be benched
Many had expected Kylian Mbappe to be the star of Euro 2024, however that has been cast into doubt after he suffered a broken nose.
Les Bleus' captain suffered the nasty injury after he headed the shoulder of Austrian player Kevin Danso during France's 1-0 victory in their opening game.
It was first speculated that Mbappe would miss the rest of the group stage but he's expected to be back in the fray tonight, with Didier Deschamps set to name him on the bench.
Should the soon-to-be Real Madrid star step onto the pitch, he'll be wearing a mask - which is perhaps fitting for the man who has, on so many occasions, been France's hero.
Kylian Mbappe 'will start on the BENCH' for France against NetherlandsKylian Mbappe is reportedly expected to start on the bench for France's Euro 2024 clash with the Netherlands tonight.Mail Online17:06Good evening!
Hello and welcome to Mail Sport's live coverage of today's third and final match, as Netherlands and France prepare to go toe-to-toe in Group D.
It promises to be a thrilling affair - even without the potential involvement of Kylian Mbappe - as two of the Euro 2024 favourites battle it out in Leipzig.
Les Bleus captain Mbappe remains a doubt for the clash after breaking his nose in their opening fixture, but is still expected to be named on the bench for the match.
Both sides are level on points (three each) heading into the tie but will be well aware that whoever wins this evening will be in the Group D driving seat.
